Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
This is a guided psychotherapy treatment developed to alleviate emotional suffering and linked behaviours associated with traumatic memories and negative thought patterns. These memories lose their emotional intensity, making space for healing, relief and a greater sense of calm.
EMDR is a widely respected therapy used globally. It is available in many places, including the NHS, to treat symptoms like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD, anxiety disorders and panic attacks, depression and anger, self-destructive thoughts and behaviours, fear or phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
There are many kinds of underlying traumatic experiences that can affect people in these ways. These can include any accident, violent assault, betrayal in relationships, or difficult medical situations. Historical or ongoing trauma, such as emotional, sexual or physical neglect, abuse or bullying, can lead to more complicated trauma.
EMDR taps into the brain's natural healing abilities to help people rethink and integrate painful memories or beliefs connected to past events, allowing for significant and lasting relief from disturbing symptoms.
It follows a structured and evidenced-based protocol that involves bilateral brain stimulation through eye movements, tapping or sounds.
It is not essential for clients to provide detailed explanations or descriptions of things they fear or can't remember. EMDR instead attends to feelings, beliefs, thoughts, behaviours and bodily sensations, aiming to lower the high levels of upset and distress that often come with difficult memories. Talking is however still an essential part of the protocol, particularly in preparation for processing.

I provide EMDR therapy online or in person. Both methods work well.
For online sessions via Zoom, I use a web application to help clients with bilateral eye movements, clients can also include bilateral sound through headphones if they choose.
When meeting in my private office, I sit across from my clients and use either one hand or a special baton to help with eye movements.
In both situations, clients can choose to include tapping if preferred.
In person appointments take place in a quiet, comfortable and discrete private room in Edinburgh (EH12). There is free parking nearby and is serviced by regular LRT buses.
Online appointments are via video link using Zoom.
Meeting weekly on a regular time and day enables a sense safety and thoughtful dialogue. These are some of the the essential ingredients for insight and momentum for change.
